I have been told it is imperative for everyone to have a 3 month plan for emergency conditions. This plan should address where and how you will live for 3 months in case of emergency and cover the following topics:
HOUSING: Know where you intend to be for the next year and a half (see HOUSING options page). Notify your family and friends of housing changes. And have a plan for staying in contact.
FOOD: It is important to stockpile 3 months of food consisting of rice, beans (4 varieties), bancha tea, seaweed, and canned chicken soup which can be supplemented by homegrown foods and local produce (see FOOD options page).
CASH: Everyone should have 3 months of cash to cover the basics of food, water, gasoline, and miscellaneous at your disposal. That is approximately $1600 in cash for the 3 months.
MEDICAL CARE: It is important to know where local medical care is available and organize local transportation for emergency care to the nearest city hospital. It is also advisable to train yourself in first-aid care and have a medical kit you are familiar with available for use (see MEDICAL CARE page).
TRANSPORTATION: It is also being suggested that you get a bicycle as a precaution in case you need transportation to and from work.
ELECTRIC: I am being told that the electric grid will be in place with only occasional outages. That is good news for those who work online.
SURVIVAL: Get a broadband radio in case of emergency situations in your area. The Red Cross has several you can choose from available for sale. Do not delay. Get one now.
Once you have your backup plan in place, forget about it. Go about your life, and know that you are prepared. Having a plan offers you peace of mind as you are prepared for certain sudden changes in an unpredictible world. Then you can get back to focussing on building your future.
